 Audio: MC Poncho’s Theme
project: Starfinger
mp3: starfinger/starfinger-ponchos_theme.mp3 (m3u)

Recently someone in the SongFight! community suggested that we write theme songs for each other. We were randomly assigned another participant, and we had a month to write a song about them.

I was assigned to a very young nerdcore rapper called MC Poncho. My song for him is linked above.

My song was written by Jim of Seattle. He did a hilariously incredible theme song for me, and I am very grateful. You can hear that here.

Jim, you are my hero.

Anarchy!

I had a few thoughts about Grey Tuesday that I wanted to mention, but I’ve been too busy playing golf on the Xbox to get around to writing them down. Unfortunately, I waited so long to do this that I’ve forgotten some of my key points.

I do, however, remember my conclusion: I am a musical anarchist.

Good arguments are being made on both sides of the fence here. Copyright law is screwed up, but as Brad asked, “Is the argument that anyone should be able to chop up Beatles and Jay-Z recordings and be allowed to sell 3,000 copies of it without compensating either party?” We could debate all day long, and I’m sick of it.

I just don’t want to talk about it anymore. I don’t want to think about it. Why does there have to be an intellectual argument? I don’t know who’s right, and I don’t want to care.

My goals are probably the same as the people pushing for legal reform, and staging online protests, blah blah blah. The difference is implementing that goal.

I deny that any authority over music exists.

Boo ya!

Back from Vacation

Hey, I’m not dead! I just got back from a trip to see my parents in North Carolina. We had a great time, but it’s good to be back.

I’ve got a couple musical projects on the immediate horizon: finalizing my Fluffy Porcupine remix for remixfight.com, writing a theme song for MC Poncho (don’t ask), and mastering another Heuristics Inc / Tapegerm album. I’ll keep you posted.

On the trip, I got Missy Elliott’s Under Construction. She’s the Bjork of hip-hop, and this album is great.

I also got Donkey T’s albums in the mail, and am thoroughly enjoying them.. More great independent music to cram into your heads.

Spewgrass

Hey, I’m the featured artist on Spewgrass.com this week. Other than a few minor factual errors (I’m not in Tapegerm anymore), I think it looks pretty good.

You should definitely check out Spewgrass if you haven’t before..There is a lot of great music represented there.

Oh, and for the ladies, here’s my picture from the spewgrass blurb without the filter effect:

Songfight SuperBowl

My song More Than Soup was voted “Unofficial 2003 Songfight Champion Song”!

I was in the “superbowl” against 2 greats: The John Benjamin Band and MC Frontalot, so it was a great honor just to make it to the finals.

To win.. it’s unthinkable.

I’m going to Disney World!

Inspiration

I feel a swell of inspiration bubbling up within me. It seems like every song I hear makes me think “I should do something like that in my next song” — It’s a pretty neat place to be.

In fact, it’s inspiring me to finally get working on a Starfinger album. I have a lot of the concepts ironed out, and I’m starting to work on lyrics. This will probably take some time away from songfighting, but it’s something I need to do.

Speaking of inspiration, I felt inspired to implement a simple guestbook. Check out the link in the upper left. Now you can say “Hi”, without needing me to say anything interesting enough to reply to.

CDs

On Saturday, I went CD shopping for the first time in months upon months. I got 3 albums:

1) Collideoscope by Living Colour — I’ve always liked these guys, so I have been meaning to pick this album up for a few months now. They are as exciting and interesting as always, but my first thought upon sticking this one in the player was “man this mix sucks”. That might have been due to the stock CD player in my station wagon, because it sounds OK in headphones now.

2) Laika Come Home by the Gorillaz (versus the Spacemonkeyz) — I had heard this was dub remixes of the hit Gorillaz album, but I wasn’t prepared for the overly reggae feel presented here. It is good dub, but I figured they’d do a more experimental twist on it .. like maybe something off of Bill Laswell’s compilation Axiom Dub, or even the Dub Pistols (not that I know anything about the Spacemonkeyz) . Anyway, I need to listen to it more, but I think it’s good.

3) The 3 E.P.’s by the Beta Band — This band is amazing, and these early recordings are some of their best. Listening to these, their first real solo album is even more of an oddity (That one has some sublimely nutzoid moments).

That reminds me, here is my cd list.
