Let me state up front that this is not worth actually looking at.
We bought iLife 06 today, for the upgraded iMovie and iDVD, and I got carried away playing with garageband and iWeb. It’s all integrated for making easy podcasts.
The default style leaves something to be desired:

My computer is loud. The CPU fans drive me bonkers. Everywhere I look suggests cleaning out the fans.. OK, that makes sense. Well, being the thorough guy that I am, I decide to clean out the heatsink while I’m at it.
Hey, there’s supposed to be thermal paste on here right? I wonder why this CPU is all smudgy looking.
Ohhhh. that was the thermal paste…
Yes, that was a hugely stupid thing to do. You should never wipe a glob of your thermal paste off the CPU. But guess what. It’s not running any hotter!
I have been monitoring the CPU temps for a few weeks now, and it actually seems to be running a bit cooler. Is it possible that alienware is using a crap thermal paste that is not doing everything it needs to be doing?
I’m going to go get some Arctic Silver for it tomorrow. Wouldn’t that be wild if it suddenly kept itself running cool enough to not need to blow the fans at full speed constantly?
Is that possible??
UPDATE: (retroactively pardon the overexcited writing style of this post). The Arctic Silver seems to be working great. It’s running cooler than I’ve ever seen it run. (Knock on wood).
