KMFDM - Tohuvabohu

Album-of-the-week: 8-22-07

It’s time for the quasi-annual Album-of-the-week! This is the brand new KMFDM album, and it will rock your pants off. Check out some tracks at their official myspace page.

Simultaneously heavy, funky, german and silly — this is one of their best albums yet.

The best part? It still sounds like KMFDM! Twenty years of conceptual continuity, baby.

What does tohuvabohu mean? It’s apparently the Hebrew word used in Genesis (you know, the Bible), indicating pre-creation chaos. Perhaps you’ve seen it translated as “formless and void”.

The Mountaineers — Messy Century

Album-of-the-week: 1-5-06

Hey, it’s the album of the week! I decided to take a break, and not do one of these in 2005. At this rate, I should probably call this the album of the year, but I’m not prepared to heap such glorious praise.

This is infectious britpop with heavy heavy electronic influences. Imagine remixes of the Beatles or maybe Oasis (in a good way). Catchy, wonderfully produced, in album form, one of my Christmas presents — I heartily recommend.

Deadweight - Stroking the Moon

Album-of-the-week: 11-9-04

I’d put this band somewhere between Faith No More, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rush, and a string quartet. It’s hard to describe. I’m enjoying it so much, I’m writing this before making it through the album once.

Let me know if you’re interested, and I’ll hook you up with some tracks.

Very good.

The Kleptones - A Night at the Hip Hopera

Album-of-the-week: 9-29-04

I’ve been lax on this front lately, but I am listening to this phenomenal album for the second time, and it inspires me to write this.

It’s an amazing album-length mashup of hip-hop and Queen songs. It is really amazing.

You can’t buy it though.. You have to download it from them:

Ever so highly recommended.

Badly Drawn Boy - One Plus One is One

Album-of-the-week: 8-31-04

I got quite a few CD’s for my birthday, but this one is the clear standout. I’ve been a fan of Badly Drawn Boy since his magnificent debut, The Hour of Bewilderbeast, but this one gets me going like none of his others.

Pop album of the year (so far).

Rabbit in the Moon - Remixes

Albums-of-the-weeks: 8-17-04

I’m probably not going to have the opportunity to post one of these next week, so I’m killing two birds with one stone here. Besides, these should really be available as a double CD set.

Rabbit in the Moon is probably my favorite [commercial] remixing entity. These two disks reinvent material from across the pop spectrum, with tracks by Sarah McLachlan, Garbage, White Zombie, Smashing Pumpkins, and more!

Well that was a dorky sentence. They are definitely worth checking out.

Sugarcubes - Life’s Too Good

Album-of-the-week: 8-11-04

If you don’t know and love Bjork, you must be a filthy, retarded communist or something. But I’ll forgive you if you are unfamiliar with The Sugarcubes.

This is the first album from the band that introduced the world to Bjork, so we really should support them with reckless purchases.

Seriously, they take credit cards. You can pay for it later.

Plus, it’s really good.

Miles Davis - Panthalassa

Album-of-the-week: 8-6-04

Bill Laswell dug up a bunch of unreleased Miles Davis recordings and weaved together this fantastic ambient soundscape. Don’t misread ambient as boring. This is highly recommended.

There’s a remix CD as well, but I have no experience with that.

Skinny Puppy - Greater Wrong of the Right

Album-of-the-week: 7-14-04

I know I already made a Skinny Puppy album-of-the-week, but this is a special occasion: their first album in 10 years.

It’s not the best introduction to the band (see the “Too Dark Park” entry from a few weeks ago for that), but it is a great listen, and I’m as happy as a clam to hear Ogre and Cevin Key together again.

Plus it has some of the goriest album art I’ve ever seen.
